Myopia Management

Child-friendly & innovative myopia management that is both safe and convenient.

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a common eye condition that makes things far away seem blurry, whilst those close by can be seen more clearly. Although there is no cure for myopia, thanks to breakthrough lens advancements, the condition can be successfully managed throughout childhood, with specialised spectacle lenses clinically proven to slow the advance of childhood short-sightedness.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia usually begins in childhood and can increase whilst they are still growing. This condition has been escalating over the last 50 years, with these contributing influences now being linked to it:

Genetics: Although myopia is more common in children with a myopic parent, this isn’t always the case. Studies have also shown that ethnicity may also be a factor.

Environment: The extended use of near work on smartphones, tablets and computers and the blue light these emit is likely playing a role.

Lack of natural light: Studies have shown that the natural light outdoors helps protect against myopia – a consideration with modern children staying indoors more than in the past.

Myopia Treatment: Essilor Stellest™ Lens

At Louise Sloan Opticians, we prescribe the high-quality myopia control lens called Essilor Stellest™ lens if you have a child with increasing myopia. The Stellest™ lens corrects your child’s short-sightedness whilst also controlling their myopia progression.

Why Choose the Essilor Stellest™ Lenses for your Child?

Standard optical lenses for myopia will correct your child’s eyesight , but as their eyes grow, their vision may worsen, possibly affecting their future adult vision. Thanks to advancements in lens technology, Essilor created the Stellest™ lens. These smart lenses correct near and far vision – and are clinically proven to slow down the progression of short-sightedness as your child grows.

  • Versatile, safe and easy to use – the Stellest™ spectacle lenses look no different to a standard lens & fit with the fantastic range of child frames at Louise Sloan Opticians.
  • Clinically proven effectiveness – studies have shown the Stellest™ lens slows and controls the myopic progression by 67%.
  • Measurable success – 9 out of 10 children wearing the Stellest™ lens had eye growth similar to or slower than in non-myopic children after the first year.
